Mortal Kombat X arriving next year

After lots of teases, NetherRealm Studios have announced that the latest instalment in their incredibly popular Mortal Kombat series will arrive in 2015. To be called Mortal Kombat X, we may see more of the game at this month’s E3 expo.

Title - Mortal Kombat X arriving next year

The announcement came with an absolutely fantastic trailer featuring Scorpion and Sub Zero (two fighters that have been mainstays since the first game in the 1990s) duking it out. Be warned though, there is some very graphic violence within the video below so only click play if you’ve a strong stomach! I’ve always been a fan of the Mortal Kombat games, and can safely say I’ve played every iteration from the original arcade machine all the way through to the clever 2011 ‘reboot’ of the series and story timeline.

The pacing of the fights were, and are still, of a much slower speed to the lightning combos of Street Fighter or BlazBlue and the characters feel like they have much more weight to them. The announcement trailer definitely seems to capture that feel and I expect they’ll be using an updated game engine from the 2011 title and 2012’s Injustice: Gods Among Us.

There’s almost certainly going to be mountains of content to unlock from hidden characters to concept art as in previous games and no doubt they’ll take the opportunity to add extra stages and fighters through DLC.

Interestingly, NetherRealm Studios studios have stated that Mortal Kombat X ‘launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy’. Which, to me, translates as ‘online leaderboard’ but we’ll see. They also stated that players will have ‘the ability to choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style’ which has the potential to add much more depth to proceedings; and I’m curious to see how this is implemented and the impact it has.

Safe to say I think we can expect more news from E3 on this one.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to arrive in 2015 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4.
