Sequel to Sleeping Dogs announced

United Front Games has announced it’s working on a new game in the Sleeping Dogs universe. Called Triad Wars, publisher Square Enix trademarked the name recently – and the 1001-Up.com team are very excited about this.

Title - Sequel to Sleeping Dogs announced

Square Enix picked up open-world crime game Sleeping Dogs after Activision dropped it from its publishing portfolio. It was published in 2012 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and went on to sell 1.75 million copies. But like other games released by the publisher last year, it failed to meet the high expectations; they had been hoping for between 2 and 2.5 million sales.

UFG revealed in a short update on its website: “So, we’re making a new game!” They went on to state: “We can’t say a lot about it right now, but you might have read about a trademark registration for something called Triad Wars? Well, we’re super-excited that it’s another game based in the Sleeping Dogs universe, it’s something we’ve wanted to do for ages, and we’re very happy to be working with Square Enix again… but that’s all we can give you for the time being – we’ll have more information about what the game’s going to be in 2014.”

What’s in store for the Sleeping Dogs universe?

It’s good news for fans who may have worried about the franchise’s fate after the first outing failed to meet Square Enix’s sales expectations, along with Tomb Raider and Hitman: Absolution. It even had a strange start when it evolved from the ashes of the canceled True Crime: Hong Kong. As mentioned, Triad Wars will take place in the Sleeping dogs universe but it hasn’t been confirmed if it will feature our hero Wei Shen again; or it may take the GTA route where all the chaos happens in the same world but the protagonist changes with every instalment.

We’ll hear more about the title in 2014, UFG have said. Personally I hope Triad Wars does stick with Wei Shen as I thought his struggle with doing the right thing, helping the police or following his heart, and assisting his criminal friends win the feud with their enemies made for an emotional story. I feel that there’s a lot more of Wei’s character and past to discover and we would love it if Square Enix would let us do that when Triad Wars arrives.
