1001 Previews: Eden Star

Last week we chose Eden Star as one of our ‘Best of Eurogamer’ picks. But what we didn’t mention was the fact we managed to get an interview with CEO John Tearle of Flix Interactive, makers of this amazing sci-fi adventure.

Title - Best of Eurogamer Eden Star

For those of you who missed our previous article, Eden Star is a first-person survival creation game that blends innovative physics-based combat, destructible environments and freeform construction with the exploration of a hostile alien world. Players gather mineral resources from the world of Pharus 7 in order to fund the expansion and development of unique and powerful technologies as they create, destroy and manipulate the world around them.

When we got to meet the boys from Flix Interactive on our first day at the Expo we found them to be very friendly. They even helped me play through the demo when I was doing pretty badly, and we got to see a cool secret Easter egg that made us chuckle when they told us the reasoning behind it. Despite being in a pre-alpha stage when showed to us, we still had a lot of fun playing and I would have hogged the machine all day if I could have!

We found that the gameplay was similar to the Xbox 360 classic Mirrors Edge in the way that it’s first-person with an element of free-running; although still in an early stage, the psychics feel very realistic. Tearing down a wall with your destructive powers then gathering up the minerals makes for a satisfying experience that I could see never getting boring.

Flix Interactive have recently been successful on Steam Greenlight, and this has given the team confirmation that what they are doing is being noticed. A Kickstarter project is soon to follow which no doubt will be a huge success; with its great story and stunning visuals, it’s hard to look at Eden Star and not be impressed. I’ll certainly be backing the campaign once it’s up and running.

Thank you to John Tearle for giving us his time and chatting to us during our interview. Flix Interactive are clearly a talented team with a great game on their hands! This studio has a bright future and I can’t wait until Eden Star is available.

    1. It does have some Minecraft elements in terms of building but it has a feel much more similar to StarForge
